The Criminal Investigation Department of the Edo State Police Command is currently investigating a suspect, Jeff Obasohan for setting his landlord, Joseph Iyen, 83, on fire over unpaid rent.
This happened on Wednesday, March 16, 2016, in Uwa Street, located between Second East Circular road and Third East Circular road in Benin, Edo State.
According to reports, Obasohan directs hostile statements at the deceased and his wife whenever he is asked to pay his house rent.
The deceased wife, Esther, while giving an account of the incident said, “He does not pay his house rent; he does not pay the light bill.”
“Since 2014, we said he should leave this house; I don’t want trouble. He threatened to kill me or my husband. We took him to court.”
“Then, my husband fell sick. Later, they said that the case ‎had been struck out.”
The Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, Osifo Abiodun, has confirmed the incident.
He said, “That is true. The suspect is in custody. The suspect has made a statement; the case has been transferred to the state CID‎.”
Before the sad incident, Iyen was said to have given the suspect a quit notice on two occasions, but Obasohan allegedly refused to pay.
