Following speculations that President Muhammadu Buhari will no more be going to London for meducal checkups, the presidency has reacted.
President Muhammadu Buhari

The Presidency on Thursday said President Muhammadu Buhari has not changed his plan to return to his doctors in London, United Kingdom for follow-ups.

The Punch reports that the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said this in an interview with journalists.

Shehu said it was not true that Buhari had decided to bring his doctors to Nigeria instead of returning to London.

The presidential spokesman however did not specify when Buhari will return to London.

He said, “It is false news (that Buhari is no longer going to London). We are not aware of the reported advance movements.

“The last time the President spoke about this, he said he would return to his doctors after some time.

We are not aware that this has changed."

Buhari had shortly after he returned to the country after his 49-day medical vacation in London admitted that he had never been that sick in his life.

He then gave an indication that he will return to London for further checkup.

“I am feeling much better now,  there may, however, be need to have further follow-ups within some  weeks,” the President had said.

The Senate has suspended Borno State Senator Ali Ndume on a lengthy note for raising the vehicle importation and certificate scandals affecting prominent members of the National Assembly at the plenary.

Ali Ndume

The Senate, on Wednesday, suspended former Majority Leader, Senator Ali Ndume, for six months for not “making due diligence” before filing a petition against the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki and lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye.

Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions made the recommendation in its report, which was considered by the lawmakers at the plenary on Wednesday according to the Punch.

The suspension was to take effect immediately. The Senate had, on March 21, 2017, decided to investigate the allegation that an armoured Range Rover car said to worth N298m, but which the lawmakers said cost $298,000, seized by the Nigeria Customs Service belongs to the President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki.

The move was based on a point of order raised by Ndume, who also called on the upper chamber of the National Assembly to investigate the certificate scandal involving Senator Dino Melaye.

An online news portal, Sahara Reporters, which made the allegation in a report published on March 18, 2017, said the seizure of the Sports Utility Vehicle, allegedly belonging to Saraki, was the reason why the Senate was moving against the Controller General of the NCS, Col. Hammed Ali (retd.).

The medium reported that the car was intercepted and impounded on January 11, 2017, by the service for allegedly having fake documents.

Sahara Reporters had also in another report alleged that Melaye did not graduate from the Ahmad Bello University Zaria, Kaduna State, but was parading a fake certificate.

Ndume had said previous certificate scandals involving members of the National Assembly were probed by the lawmakers.

The former Majority Leader also quoted an online medium with a report titled, ‘Dino Melaye Allegedly Did Not Graduate From University.’

“Therefore, accordingly, I will appeal we refer the matter to Ethics and Privileges to investigate so that our colleagues would be cleared and this Senate will stand as it is supposed to,” he said.

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, who presided over the plenary on that day, referred the matter to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, which was asked to report back to the lawmakers in four weeks.

South America football heavyweight, Brazil have cruised into the 2018 World Cup after a convincing win against Paraguay.

Neymar in action

Brazil have become the first team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup as Argentina suffers painful setback.

Maintaining their proud record as the tournament’s only ever-present side with a little help from Lionel Messi’s foul mouth and lightly regarded Peru.

The five-times champions beat Paraguay 3-0 on Tuesday for their eighth successive win in the South American qualifying competition.
That in itself was not enough to confirm their participation in Russia but Peru’s surprise 2-1 win over Uruguay in a later game guaranteed Brazil a top-four finish.

With four rounds of fixtures remaining, Brazil have 33 points, followed by Colombia (24), Uruguay and Chile (23). Argentina (22) are in fifth place, which earns a two-leg play-off against the top-ranked Oceania region side.

Uruguay and Argentina still have to face each other which means it is impossible for both to overtake Brazil. Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho curled in a low opener for Brazil and Neymar capped an eventful evening with a goal in the second half before Marcelo added a late third in São Paulo.

“My greatest joy is sharing joy,” Tite said in quotes reported by espn.com.br. “When you look at the face of your family, when you see the players happy, when you see a happy little child, sharing joy is my greatest satisfaction. More pleasure.”

The Barcelona forward Neymar, captaining the side, missed a penalty and saw an effort chalked off for offside on an evening when he was routinely on the end of rough treatment from the Paraguay defenders.

Superstar singer, Wyclef Jean has been left in serious shock after he was arrested and handcuffed by the police in Los Angeles.
Haiti-born hip-hop star Wyclef Jean

Haiti-born hip-hop star Wyclef Jean is demanding a formal investigation into racial profiling by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department after he was wrongly arrested and handcuffed by police early Tuesday morning before he was released.

According to Maimi Herald, officers said they had a report of a robbery in the area and he fit the description of the suspect.

Jean’s spokeswoman Melanie A. Bonvicino said the popular singer was subjected to “police brutality, racial profiling, police bias and the ongoing discriminatory practices of law enforcement officials which remain rampant throughout the United States and for which the LA Sheriff’s office is deeming a case of mistaken identity.”

She said Jean was calling on Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, LAPD chief Charlie Beck and the LA Sheriff’s Department to mount an investigation into his racial profiling allegation while also asking “the ACLU and Black Lives Matter to join him in defense of civil liberties and racial bias.”

“He wasn’t even given a minute to think,”Bonvicino said of Jean, who is scheduled to appear on Good Morning America on Wednesday to discuss the incident.

On tour promoting his latest album,“J’Ouvert,” Jean was enroute back to his hotel from a recording session. He took to Twitter to talk about being “appalled” by the officers’ behavior — something Bonvicino wishes he hadn’t done.

“He didn’t react well,” she said.

In a statement after the incident, Jean said he was asked by police to put his hands up, then told not to move.

“I was instantly handcuffed before being asked to identify myself and before being told why,” he said.

He said he told the officers who he was and that they had the wrong person.

“They proceeded to ignore me and I was treated like a criminal,” he said. “I am sure no father wants his sons or daughters to see him in handcuffs especially if he’s innocent.”

A video of the incident shows an officer removing Jean’s trademark blue, red and white Haitian flag bandana from his head as he tried to explain to officers that he had just left a recording studio.

“Just so you all know, I am going to sue the LAPD,” he says on the video. “You took off my hat and you put the ’cuffs on me.”

It turned out later that the officers weren’t with the Los Angeles Police Department. They were from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of the West Hollywood division of the sheriff’s office.

“He was not arrested,” Sgt. D. Walker of the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Department told the Miami Herald.

Walker said officers had a report of a robbery in the area where Jean was traveling, and “the description given by the victims of the robbery” of the suspect’s car was similar to the vehicle Jean was traveling in.

“He also was similar in description, all the way down to the detail that the suspect was wearing a red bandana,” Walker said.

Walker said Jean was released because“as they detained him, they got further information. He was immediately released.”

Wyclef, who started his career as a member of the Fugees with Lauryn Hill, will be performing at Kaya Fest at Bayfront Park in Miami on April 22. Hill is also being featured in the line up of the festival, which is also being promoted at marijuana-education event.
